on Nebulae around
Evolved Stars

OVERVIEW

The Group for the Research of Nebulae around Evolved Stars (GRNES) is composed of an international team of astrophysicists aimed at a better understanding of the formation of nebulae around evolved stars and their diffusion into the Interstellar Medium (ISM). Our research targets nova shells, bubble around Wolf-Rayet (WR; evolved massive stars) stars, and planetary nebulae (PNe, bubbles around evolved low-to-intermediate mass stars), which contribute significantly to the injection into the ISM of processed material rich in carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, lithium and neon among others. The members of GRNES have granted access to state-of-the-art national and international observational facilities (OAN, GTM, GEMINI, GTC, ALMA, CFHT, ESO, ORM), own a small-aperture telescope, and are experienced users of archival data of space telescopes (Chandra, XMM-Newton, Spitzer, Herschel). These observations provide us with a panchromatic view of the different nebular components around evolved stars and their interaction with the ISM that are interpreted using sophisticated hydrodynamical computational simulations and stellar atmospheres and radiative transfer codes. The objectives of this research network include not only the dissemination of the results through scientific papers and at international scientific conferences, but also outreach activities for the general public, the collaboration between national and international participant institutions, and the formation of human resources.
